In here, I’ll cover the hardware requirements. I’ll write a continuation article about the software you may need for your home business.
First of all, there is no use on looking for a computer job at home if you don’t own a computer. Get credit or borrow some money and buy it, look for one on the flea market, with the neighbors, family, friends, public schools or libraries, internet cafe, etc. The good thing about starting a business from home is that you don’t need state of the art equipment. After you gain substantial income, you can start upgrading your tools. In the meantime, a low end pc will do, just make sure you get the minimum requirements:
- 80 gigabytes hard disk (that’s the memory available to store the software installation and your data)
- 512 kilobytes of RAM (that’s the memory available to run programs WHILE the computer is on)
- CD/DVD reader
- A network card for your internet connection
- CRT Monitor
- keyboard and mouse.
You may get lucky and find used equipment with the previous specification for as low as US$30 dollars, but normally it will be in the range of $50-$100 dollars.
The specs I show you here are old (I’m writing this on Dec. 2009). I’m telling you this because you can go to a computer shop and probably they can assemble a computer for you with this old specs but the parts can be new. This will cost you around $200 dollars, but you would be asking too much, because those parts would be hard to find brand new.
The kind of low cost computer that any shop can assemble for you today with parts right “out of the box” will be between $300 and $400 depending on the components. In this price range you should get at least
- 160 gigabytes hard disk
- 1 gigabyte of RAM
- CD/DVD reader
- a decent network card
- a decent sound card
- LCD monitor
- keyboard and mouse
If you want to go over $400, then you can get a bigger hard disk, one or two extra gigabytes of RAM, a CD/DVD recorder instead of just a reader, a microphone, speakers and/or headphones. And since you are already in this price range, there are small laptops you can get in case you’re willing to sacrifice some physical comfort to gain in portability. One big advantage of laptops is that you can work almost anywhere and you can bring your talents with you and show them to your potential costumers.
Don’t get disscouraged if at first you don’t get the computer of your dreams. Instead, let it motivate you. While you work, look at your old, big CRT monitor and make it a goal to change it for a flat LCD. Or wish to be able to get a sound card and speaker where you can listen to your music (and talk to your clients by the way).
But, get yourself a computer. You’re almost there.
Cheers!
metalorn.

Hello. This is kind of an “unconventional” question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you’ve got it? I also have a blog and am really looking to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am very new to all of this …so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I’ll just keep working on it one day at a time Thanks for any help you can offer here
